1. 1568 The Abolition of Slavery in Brazil 1880's to 1890's.

The Law of 13 May 1888 abolishing slavery without compensation was the death blow to many plantation owners from Rio de Janeiro who had held a large number of slaves during a period of economic squeeze suffered severely in regions such as Rio de Janeiro. Abolition hastened the collapse of the Empire and the establishment of the Republic. Abolition, without compensation for the slave owners, led to traditional supporters from the planter classes in Rio de Janeiro abandoning the emperor and joining with republican planters from Sao Paulo. Brazilian abolition of slavery in 1888 was not followed by systematic efforts to improve the lot of former slaves. Many individuals and small family units continued to depend upon the plantation owners for their welfare. 10 pgs. 34 f/c. 15b.

2. 1680 Analyze the Effect of the Exchange Rate Stabilization Programs in Argentina.

This paper will probe at the trials and tribulations of the exchange stabilization program(s) in Argentina over the first half of the 1990s. This type of study could potentially draw on a number of important and directly related factors, and an even more impressive roster of indirect links. In the interests of brevity, only the most relevant factors will be drawn into the discussion. These include the nature of the stabilization programs in Argentina, the debt crisis of 1995, the debate between fixed and flexible exchange rates, the prediction of future exchange rates using spot values, and a brief mention on the other forces that are at work to undermine efforts to sustain economic stabilization in the developing economies. One of the important ones to mention is globalization, which is linked directly to factor allocation, linked interest rates, highly mobile capital, and the like. 14.5 pgs. 26 f/c. 10b.

3. 1684 Exogenous Factors Affecting the Growth of the Brazilian Economy.

The country has almost invariably been too dependent on one or two major agricultural export products, whose demand has been determined by insecure global demand and political pressures. In relative terms, poverty inequality, foreign debt, and inflation remain staggering. This paper will look at the record of Brazilian economic development in terms of these and other important indicators. Topics looked at are: 1) Brazil's Industrial-Agricultural Sector Strategy, 2) Brazil's International Trade Strategy, 3) The Public-Private Sector Strategy and then 4) A Look Towards The Future. 13.5 pgs. 27 f/c. 7b.

4. 2118 The Economic and Social Consequences of Foreign Debt in Brazil.

Brazilian economic development has been has been characterized by a series of boom and bust periods with little to be said in terms of sustainable development. Because of this, governments throughout the latter half of the 20th century have made efforts to guide development via economic diversity through forced industrialization. In relative terms, poverty inequality, foreign debt, and inflation remain staggering. As an example, in 1995 Brazil's total outstanding foreign debt was 159 billion dollars. This has had significant repellant effects on foreign investment. During the Latin American Debt crisis in 1995, the pressures that were placed on the Brazilian economy could not be sustained. With an economy that was just starting to really grow, it could not repay the debts that it had accumulated during this crisis period. Like a bubble, the economy burst and Brazil continues to suffer the effects of a high reliance on foreign capital. This paper will look at the record of Brazilian economic development in terms of these and other important indicators. 11 pgs. 22 f/c. 7b.

This paper compares and contrasts the lives and ideas of Rigoberta Menchu and Ernesto 'Che' Guevara. Both are/were leaders of populist movements, but each brought his/her own perspective to the task of working actively for political change. In studying two narratives of their lives, The Motorcycle Diaries and I, Rigoberta Menchu, the reader learns that their ideas and their actions stem from the profound experience of injustice that both encountered in different ways - Guevara on a motorcycle trip around South America, and Mench through the experience of life as an indigenous person in Guatemala. 4 pgs.
